  • Chopped Green Onions: For added flavor and texture.
  • Seasoned Nori (Seaweed Sheets): Perfect for wrapping rice.

My Step-by-Step Guide: How to Enjoy Natto & Raw Egg the Japanese Way!

For many Japanese people, eating natto with a raw egg mixed into it is the ultimate comfort food. It might be a challenge if you’re new to natto’s unique smell and sticky texture, but for the brave and adventurous eaters, it’s an experience not to be missed!

Here’s how I prepare and enjoy my Natto Teishoku:

  1. Prep the Natto: Open the natto container. Take out the small packets of sauce (tare) and mustard (karashi). Remove the plastic film from the natto.
  2. Mix the Natto: Pour the tare sauce and karashi mustard over the natto. Using your chopsticks, mix it vigorously. The more you mix, the stickier and fluffier it gets!
  3. Prepare the Egg: Crack the raw egg into a small ceramic bowl provided. You can place the eggshell into the small plastic container (often provided for trash).
  4. Add Green Onions & Mix Egg: Add a generous amount of chopped green onions to the raw egg and mix well with your chopsticks.
  5. Combine Natto & Egg: Now, add your well-mixed natto into the bowl with the raw egg and green onions. Mix them all together thoroughly until everything is well combined and slightly frothy.
  6. Enjoy with Rice: Pour this delicious natto-egg mixture over your warm white rice. Dig in! The combination is incredibly flavorful and surprisingly satisfying.
  7. Explore Flavor Variations: Don’t forget to enjoy the other components! As you eat, try wrapping some rice with the seasoned nori, or eating bites of rice with the crisp oshinko for different textures and tastes. And of course, sip on your comforting miso soup throughout the meal.

Note: If you feel the taste is too weak, mix in a little soy sauce.
